Overwatch

Postby Griffon » Sun May 15, 2016 9:47 pm

So, Overwatch is pretty much a very "Team Fortress 2"-esque shooter with a rather Pixar visual style by Blizzard, the guys behind Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. The open beta for the game ran last weekend and Happy and I really liked it! You can bet we preordered it for Playstation the next day. Is anyone else thinking of picking it up?

Armored Core has changed.
It's no longer about recreation, originality or ability. It's an endless series of xeroxed designs, made by copycats and sheep. Armored Core, and its consumption of time, has become a hackneyed ruse. Armored Core has changed. Unoriginal players pilot unoriginal ACs, use unoriginal setups. Overpowered weapons on their mech atrophy and degenerate their abilities. Design copying. Weapon copying. Player copying. Tactic copying. Everything is observed, and then copied. Armored Core has changed.

It looks kinda like a cross between MOBA and FPS for gameplay? Or at least, that's the impression I got when I initially saw it. Not something I'm terribly excited about. DOOM is out now too, I may give that one a look see.

A cross between a MOBA and FPS? Hmmm, not really, I think that would better describe Battleborn, a very similar-looking game, but apparently they play quite different. No, Overwatch is a shooter with objective-based rounds very similar to Team Fortress 2. There's game modes where you have to capture and control points on the map and where you have to escort/defend against a payload to its destination. I was surprised CTF wasn't a game mode but after thinking about it there would be a couple of really OP characters for that.

Overwatch looks fun, but it does have more of a focus on abilities rather than gunplay. Another game that often gets compared to it is Dirty Bomb, despite them being very different. I think Dirty Bomb hit the balance on abilities vs weapons much better than overwatch. The abilities are enough to make each character distinct, but the weapons are your bread and butter. In the right hands, even medics can be quite effective in combat. In Overwatch, some characters should almost never shoot. Overwatch doesn't emphasize the FPS skillset (Soldier 76 literally has aimbot. what. :? ) so much as tactics and teamwork. In that sense, it's MOBA-like. I might pick it up if some friends do, but it's not what I'm into right now.

I mainly associate MOBA's with a wide variety of classes, characters, whatever to choose from. You also have the top down, 3rd person thing too, but I was mainly relating to the classes with unique abilities for each different character. Like Fenrir said though, it's not simply a matter of who has the better aim and tactical awareness, which is what I typically associate with FPS games.

In Overwatch can you choose any character you want, or is it more like MOBA's where you have a selection to choose from, and each character on the map is unique? Can you have multiple Tracers' in a game?

Oh I gotcha. Yeah, you can pick any character you want, and each character has their own abilities but is part of a loosely generalized category. You've got your attackers who are generally fast and offense-based or rather well-rounded, there's the defender category which consists of sniper, engineer, explosives, etc. type characters, the tank category which is pretty self explanatory, and the support class.
Neat thing is, it lets you know on the side if there's a useful player type that's missing, so a savvy player can see if you're on defense and there's no tank or medic, they might wish to change.

I enjoyed the beta quite a bit, as did the party of friends I played with, but most of us concluded that it would probably grow old pretty quickly and wouldn't be nearly as much fun without >50% of the team in a party.

I'll probably pick it up when there's a good sale some day, but otherwise I have no incentive too. At least I'll always have the sunglasses they gave me for standing in line to try it at PAX...

Some friends picked this up, so I jumped in too. I'm having fun playing with them, but overall it's a resounding 'meh'. I like the polish and weight of Blizzard as developers, but the chrome coat, bells, and whistles (ezmode ultimates, play of the game, and a laundry list of things that amount to constant back-patting and suppression of mechanical skill+creativity) are driving me nuts. I could rant for days on that stuff, and would still fire the game up right after.

*sigh* Maybe I'm just becoming an old man who wants everyone to play Quake or Tribes. Oh no I really am, please send help.
